The Indian Sailor’s Home and the Indian seamen’s Hostel managed by the Society have continued to provide the largest accommodation to seamen in the country. Amenities to seamen were improved and increased considerably from time to time. The Committee of Management meets regularly and guides the Society in the smooth running of these two large establishments. Seamen are provided clean accommodation, pleasant atmosphere and recreational facilities. ISHS is registered as a Company Not for Profit under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956. Read more...
The Indian Sailors’ Home, Mumbai was outcome of lengthy consultation between the Government of India and the Government of Bombay as to the most suitable way of perpetuating the memory of the Indian Seamen who lost their lives in the service of the British Empire in the Great War of 1914-18 and Second World War of 1939-45.
The construction work was started in November, 1930, and the Home was opened by His Excellency Sir Frederick Sykes, P.C., G.C.I.E, G.B.E, K.C.B., C.M.G., Governor of Bombay, on the 16th December,1931. Read more...
